Rishi Bankim Chandra Evening College emerged out of
the parent body (RBC College) in 1984. Within a short time, the institution
came under the 2(f) and 12B clauses of UGC. However, it took a long time for the
Evening College to get its own share of the land and building properties from
the parent body due to legal and procedural hassles. Because of the same
complications, the college got its own set of government-sanctioned
non-teaching staff only at the far end of the 1990s.
With the beginning of the new millennium in 2001, the college began to
expand its academic scope and facilities by introducing new subjects, new
programs and new Honours courses.
In 2005, the college offered itself to be evaluated for the first time
by NAAC and got accredited. Thereafter, a new four-storied building was
constructed providing accommodation and space for library, seminar hall,
accounts section, new class rooms, IT lab, science labs, meeting room, PG
section and yoga room. The Health Unit got renovated and restructured at this
time with the added facility of health check-up, first-aid and primary
treatment in cases of emergency. The Central Library of the college has opened
Rishi Bankim Gallery flaunting the works and mementoes of Rishi Bankim Chandra,
the great littérateur the institution is named after. The employment of KOHA
system as ILMS has improved the service of the library.
By the year 2010, the college had got a good number of sanctioned
full-time teachers and had opened Honours courses in such subjects as Bengali,
English, History, Geography, Economics and Sanskrit.
During the five-year plan period (2012-17) as many as six full-time
faculties went for Minor Research Projects under UGC schemes. At the same time
two of the faculties completed Major Research Projects funded by UGC. Besides,
many other teachers completed PhD courses at their own expenses. The college also
completed Ladies Hostel Building utilizing its own fund and also the grant
received from UGC.
In the year 2016, the institution once again applied for NAAC evaluation
for the second cycle and was awarded accreditation with a grade better than the
earlier one. The college organized many a seminar in different subjects using
fund both from its own resources and UGC.
By the year 2020, the college could appoint a few more sanctioned
full-time teachers and could introduce new Honours courses in Political Science and Philosophy. The
greatest achievement of this time was the introduction of the PG course in
Commerce. The college has introduced Guidance Courses for Job-oriented
Competitive exams and has received great responses from the learners.
